Dear friends,

As the campaign nears the finish line, we would like to take a moment to offer a reminder of Dr. Sauerberg’s positions and how they contrast with those of Senator Durbin. Below, you will find a list of points summarizing where Dr. Sauerberg stands on major issues; if you have any further questions that are not addressed in this list, please feel free to contact our office for clarification.

It is important to remember that Dr. Sauerberg is a Washington outsider, not a deeply entrenched politician who has spent 37 years on the government payroll, and not beholden to any special interest groups. He brings an opportunity for real change, whereas Sen. Durbin has had decades to affect change and has failed.

While there is only a week to go until the election, Dr. Sauerberg still needs your contributions!  Please considering making a contribution today!

Also, please forward this e-mail to your friends, family and neighbors who may be interested in learning more about Dr. Sauerberg!  Thank you again for your ongoing support, and we look forward to a victory on Nov. 4!

Sincerely,

The Sauerberg Team

The Economy and the Bailout

· Dr. Sauerberg would have opposed the recent bailout, which he called “welfare for Wall Street.” He supports free-market reforms such as temporarily repealing the capital gains tax; an end to “mark-to-market” accounting; an acceleration of depreciation; reinstituting the “uptick rule”; and a cut in the corporate tax rate.

o Sen. Durbin argues there were only two options-to vote for the $700 billion bailout or do nothing-so he voted for the bailout. The irony is that Sen. Durbin authorized a $700 billion check to the same people he believes caused the economic crisis.

Healthcare

· Dr. Sauerberg has proposed a market-based healthcare reform that would make quality, affordable healthcare available to all Americans. He believes the government must encourage portability, competition, accessibility and individual ownership of quality medical insurance. Additionally, costs will decrease dramatically if legislators work to eliminate frivolous lawsuits and reduce the billions of dollars of fraud and waste in Medicaid and Medicare.

o Sen. Durbin favors government control over personal control and wants to take your money to pay for others’ healthcare.

Energy

· Dr. Sauerberg’s plan to create energy independence and help reduce the impact sky-high gas prices are having on the hard-working families of this country includes short- and long-term goals. We must drill immediately to decrease the cost of gas NOW. We must also expand nuclear technology–a proven resource in Illinois–while also working to develop new technologies in wind, solar and clean coal.

o Sen. Durbin would rather address our energy needs by suing the oil companies, which we know would only cause the costs to be passed on to the consumers.

Immigration

· Dr. Sauerberg believes controlling our borders is vital to America’s security and economy, and rejects amnesty. He also believes, if they commit felonies, illegal immigrants should be deported after serving their sentences.

o Sen. Durbin would rather represent the interests of illegal immigrants than American citizens, and supports an amnesty bill that would cost taxpayers millions of dollars.

Sanctity of Life

· Dr. Sauerberg recently earned the endorsement of the Illinois Federation for Right to Life, thanks to his family’s ongoing support of crisis pregnancy centers and his commitment to working to reduce the number of abortions in this country. He also believes marriage exists between one man and one woman, and opposes judicial activism that would result in a change in that definition.

o Sen. Durbin flip-flopped on his pro-life views when it became more politically expedient to be pro-choice. He also voted against the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and supports the same activist judges that Dr. Sauerberg opposes.

Second Amendment

· Dr. Sauerberg believes existing gun laws sufficiently balance the need to protect individual rights with the public’s concern over reducing gun violence, and the way to truly combat these crimes is through aggressive prosecution.

o Sen. Durbin supports extensive restrictions on gun ownership and has received a rating of “F” from the National Rifle Association and an “F-” from the Gun Owners of America.

Supporting our Troops

· Dr. Sauerberg recognizes that our troops are great Americans, sacrificing their time and lives for our country, and believes a system of benchmarks to the Iraqi government accountable is in the best interests of our country and troops. He rejects a timeline for withdrawal and will rely on the advice of the leaders on the ground, such as General Petraeus, to indicate the appropriate time to leave the area.

o Sen. Durbin referred to our brave soldiers as Nazis in 2005, and only apologized when forced to do so. He has consistently expressed his desire to surrender to terror through the immediate abandonment of the job in Iraq. Sen. Durbin also declared the surge a failure before it had even begun.

Taxes and Spending

· Dr. Sauerberg believes that Illinoisans deserve real tax relief by dramatically overhauling the system to make it fairer, flatter and substantially simpler. He also supports making the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 permanent.

o Sen. Durbin has consistently tried to increase spending for countless government interferences in the lives of U.S. citizens and votes for expensive projects (like the Bridge to Nowhere and a museum honoring Woodstock) that are funded with taxpayer dollars.

Education

· Dr. Sauerberg believes No Child Left Behind has been effective at establishing a system of benchmarks for providing quality education, but recognizes it is not a perfect system and requires adjustment.

o Sen. Durbin, rather than making the system more efficient and successful, has allowed education funding to go toward bureaucratic and administrative salaries-operations far removed from the students.

Trade

· Dr. Sauerberg recognizes that free trade is fundamental to the health of our economy, and that in an increasingly global economy, American businesses and manufacturers must be given every opportunity to compete and win in the international arena.

o Sen. Durbin opposes the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, even though it could benefit Illinois manufacturers like Caterpillar.
