Are the results we are about to see meaningful beyond the districts and states involved, or is the outcome essentially meaningless?

My gut says that the truth is somewhere between the extremes. At the core, however, I think that this will be a good day for conservatism and conservative values. Your thoughts? The comments are open.

UPDATE: Poll Added.

NY-23

It’s the race the political blogoshpere, cable and network news, and print sources are all talking about — New York’s special election in House district 23. If you tuned out Friday afternoon, you may have missed a few things.

On Friday, the day after the only three way debate, Hoffman continued to pick up endorsements from George Pataki and others. On Saturday Dede Scozaafava decided to suspend her campaign, and on Sunday she showed how much being a “Life-long Republican” meant to her — by supporting Democrat Bill Owens.

Scozzafava dropped out after Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman experienced a late-in-the-game surge. The move was expected to consolidate GOP voters behind Hoffman on Tuesday.

But on Sunday, Scozzafava issued a written statement in which she backed Democrat Bill Owens.

As Ed Morrissey and many others pointed out,

Doesn’t this prove the point conservatives had been making about Dede Scozzafava all along?

Why, yes. Yes it does.

As you can imagine, all of these various pieces have shook up the polling. The only one I’ve seen – post Dede – is one from PPP.

In a three way contest with Democrat Bill Owens and Republican Dede Scozzafava Hoffman leads with 51% to 34% for Owens and 13% for Scozzafava. In a head to head contest with Owens Hoffman holds a 54-38 advantage.

In other words, it’s a toss-up. What? That’s what Mike Allen suggested on Morning Joe.

The claim by Allen, Politico’s chief political correspondent, was so absurd that, on the spot, host Joe Scarborough offered 3:1 odds to Allen and anyone else wanting to place a few kopeks on Dem Bill Owens.

The real poll is tomorrow. Along with the governorships in NJ and VA it should be an interesting 48 hours.

I wrote about the blogs that I’m a part of at bRight & Early this morning and some folks have come to visit. Here is what I had to say about this site:

[A] group effort with the aim of reclaiming conservative values. We are looking for bloggers (frequent or not so much) to contribute on that theme.

We are always looking for conservative bloggers who have stories they would like to post, primarily on the theme of reclaiming conservatism. As you can tell from the posts here, that definition is pretty broad. But if you would like to contribute here please register and then let me know at: lakelandjim at gmail dot com so I can change your permissions from subscriber to author.

Thanks for visiting. If your looking for other sites to check out see the post linked above.

When will the IL GOP get it

I know that Illinois is a Liberal state and will mainly be run by Democrats and Liberal Republicans.   But when you are the GOP and kick out a Conservative candidate because a established Republican is scared of his presence, then you have got troubles and will not learn anything that is going on in the grass roots of the Conservative Movement and will loose many of those that are natural GOP voters.   I know many Conservatives that are very upset with the GOP in Illinois, and around the whole country in general.   The elite that runs most of the Republican Party are loosing many Conservatives, and the last 2 elections should have been a warning.   But I am afraid that the GOP will go business as usual and will not hear the Conservatives in the Party and will keep on forcing Liberal and Moderate candidates on us, and will loose more support from the Conservative Wing of the Party.  Look at Ron Paul and his following, even though I do not like him, you have to respect his following and the enthusiasm that his supporters give to him.   I do not see that in most of the GOP.   We have had many lackluster candidates lately and the results in  the past few elections have shown this.   The GOP needs to start listening more to the Grass Root Conservatives, or they will be on the loosing side more often.

Take this as an example of where the GOP Leadership has lost its way, and is not the Big Tent Party, especially in Illinois.  I got this from a friend in Chicago.

Republican candidate banned from Lake County Fair

(What follows is the text of an email I shared with my supporters today.)

My dear friends,

I’m sorry to be cluttering your inboxes again so soon, but I wanted you hear what happened today in my campaign to unseat the RINO Sandy Cole. Following up yesterday’s message (quoted below) in which I told you that I planned to be at the Lake County Fair, I wanted to tell you about the funny thing that happened to me at the fair:

I was kicked out of the Republican booth.

Traditionally, the Republican booth at the Lake County Fair has been a place where all Republican candidates have been welcome to present their information and make contact with the voters. Even primary challengers to Republican incumbents have historically been welcomed there.

No more.

Two hours after I arrived at the booth this morning, with no warning, after no incident, I was informed by Avon Township Chairman Bob Powers that “[Lake County GOP Chairman] Dan [Venturi] says no candidates, elected officials only.” He handed me my small stack of handbills, the only materials I had placed on the table. I pointed out to him that only 8 days earlier, at last Monday’s meeting of the Lake County GOP central committee, he had himself announced that candidates would be welcome. Mr. Powers told me that he had quit any organizational authority for the booth last Friday, and that it was Mr. Venturi’s project now. I left quietly without making a scene. I attempted to call Chairman Venturi, but was told he was unavailable, and would return my call later. Hours later, he has not called.

What happened in that two hours? Certainly nothing negative I did. Some of that time I spent in the booth, greeting and chatting with the few passers-by that stopped, and some of it I spent wandering the hall, visiting other booths to talk to interested people. I had nothing but cordial conversations with anyone. But during that time, someone called Sandy Cole, and she came personally to bring more campaign materials and displays, and then she called Dan Venturi, to demand that he kick me out of the booth. As I left, I noticed that the “Mark Kirk for U.S. Senate” signs remained prominently displayed.

I had already learned two things about fear in this race: 1.) Sandy Cole is afraid of me. Desperately so. The premise of my campaign is that an underfunded conservative can beat an incumbent liberal in a Republican primary. I believe I can. I think it’s evident that Sandy Cole thinks I can, too. 2.) The Republican establishment in Lake County is afraid of Sandy Cole. The things I have been told by people in the party who want privately to support me but who fear publicly to do so had led me to believe this, but this incident confirms it in my mind.

This is an important incident, and it will lead to important consequences for Sandy Cole and the Lake County GOP.

In the meantime, take note: there is no “big tent” GOP in Lake County. Standing up for conservative Republican principles against entrenched interests will not be tolerated by the party’s current elected leaders. But there is nothing protecting the party’s elected leaders from an influx of conservatives running for precinct committeemen, and then voting them out of office. If you’re reading these words, and live in Illinois, it’s time and past time for conservatives to take back the GOP.

And to the other reform-minded candidates, local or statewide, who might have planned to campaign here, be warned.

If you listen to the MSM or the Left in this country, you always hear how mean and selfish Conservatives are.   We do not want to help the poor or various other inane reasons why we hate Black people and people less fortunate.   well, if you really want to know, Conservative is the best thing for all.   Free Markets and Liberty will always lead to a more prosperous country.   But if you look at what the MSM and Left, the only way you can get happiness is through the government.   This is the antithesis of what our country was founded on.  Individualism and Federalism were some of the main foundations of that Document that the Left think is a living document.

Each state would be its own entity and the Federal government would be there to protect the states.  Now the hand of the Federal Government is in our every day life and the Supreme Court has allowed the Commerce Clause to be used in ways the Founding Fathers never thought it should be used.  We have the Federal Government telling states that they will get money for projects if they jump through hoops to get them.

Somewhere along the way, the United States of America has lost its way and we need to get it back on track.  As in this video we see the Soft Tyranny poking its head into our country.

That is the Question??

I guess it is very hard to actually pinpoint where I lie on the political spectrum.   I think I am a Libertarian Conservative as my friend Snooper has posted about.  As many of us on the Conservative/Libertarian side see the GOP going more and more left every day and getting farther and farther away from the basic principles that had drawn us to the Grand Old Party.   I agree a lot with what Snooper posted, to a certain extent, I am not a really big fan of Ron Paul and his minions.   But there is much the GOP needs to address to get back many of the Libertarian wing of the party.   I do not think that in this day and age, a third party is a viable option, there is too many obstacles put upbut both the RNC and DNC.

So where does that leave us, the ones that tend to be a little more Libertarian and not as much just Republicans, but believe in principles and the Founding Father’s intent.  Make no mistake, both the DNC and RNC have amultitude of power hungry politicians that do not do what is best for the country, and do what they think will get them elected or the next donation.  They are mainly charlatans and none have a firm backbone or stand on principle.   I may not agree with all of Ron Paul’s ideas, but at least he stands by his principles.   Just look at Sen Specter.   In his speech he pretty much said that he changed party just so he would win the next election,  as he did in his early career by the way.

Again where does that leave us???   My brother worked for the IL GOP House many years ago.  And it pretty much made him disgusted with the whole political process.   Just think, “you never really want to see how they make sausage”.  And that is our political system.   Hate it or not.  That is what we have got.   We have too many that do not care and will only read a little here or there about what is going on in DC, and even less on what is going on in the local government.   Too many care about who will won the next American Idol or who gets kicked off of Survivor to carewhat is happening to our country.

What I  think we need is to try and get the Voters to actually give a damn about what happens.  Too many have lost faith in our political system and have just given up and could care less.  Apathy is everywhere,  and all theshenanigans that our trusted leaders do every year does not help.  The thing is how to get people more involved and motivated to look into what is going on around them.  I do not know exactly how to do that.  If anyone has any ideas , leave a comment.

And then we on the right side of the aisle seem to always fight and stab each other in  the backs.  I know that we need to have a big tent in the GOP, but does that mean that we should leave the principles of Limited Government, Strong Defense and more Liberty at the door???  The Libertarians fight with the Neo-Cons, the paleo-cons fight with the Religious Right.   This needs to stop, or we will be left so far behind and be walking the wilderness for a long time to come.    We need to find the things we all agree on and stop fighting about the minutia.   There is not going to be any Political Party or Politician that I am going to agree with %100.  And I doubt that anyone out there will find one that will.  So we need to join together and fight against the real enemy, the Left in this country that wants to drag America into a European Socialist state, which Obama has be doing at a fast pace.

Pay Attention!

I’m talking to myself in the headline. It’s pretty bad when the person who maintains the Blogiversary Database doesn’t realize that one of his blogs — this one — is celebrating it’s Blogiversary. That’s right, Reclaim Conservatism celebrates it’s first year today.

Thanks to everyone who contributes here, and especially to everyone who takes time to comment, or just stop by.

We are working to make this a better site, a true go-to destination for information and action regarding conservatism.

While I have your attention, I’d like to invite you to take a look at the Reclaim Wiki. After you look, I’d like to invite you to do a few more things.

  • Sign up and help us grow the project.
  • Tell others about what we are doing at the Wiki.
  • A little link love is always appreciated.

Thanks again for visiting. We look forward to seeing you again and again in year two.

Work on the Wiki continues. As I work on some of the pages and sections and behind the scene stuff I am coming out here to ask a question.

Stix had a suggestion, that we add a section with information and links to groups and organizations that promote conservative ideas. What groups would you suggest? Please put your suggestions in the comments.
